Tagaytay is particularly famous for the Taal Volcano. Although often described as one of the smallest volcanoes in the world, it is one of the largest. The entire Tagaytay ridge is the crater's edge, and Taal Lake is the volcano's caldera.
Taal volcano is also known as the largest island within a lake on an island. One of its greatest eruptions in recent years was in January 1911. The blast killed many local farmers, and a tidal wave across the lake drowned those in boats too. Over 1300 people died in just one day.
A tour of Taal Volcano is only possible when the alert level is below 2. Local tour handlers offer Day Excursions to Tagaytay and Taal Volcano from Manila, although it is possible to stay at any from a choice of fine hotels in the area.
